History of Alexandria
During his stay in Egypt in 332/331 BC, Alexander the Great founded Alexandria. An old Egyptian settlement called Ra-Kedet already existed on the site, situated on the promontory between the sea and the brackish lake of the hinterland, Lake Mareotis (modern-day Lake Mariyut).
