Where can you find wild dolphins in the Red Sea?

These endearing marine mammals can be observed in numerous regions from Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sal Hasheesh, Safaga, El Quseir to Marsa Alam and on the Sinai Peninsula near Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab.

Dolphins in Egypt

The diverse and pristine marine world is one of the highlights of a holiday in Egypt.

The colorful underwater world of the Red Sea is breathtaking and unforgettable.

You're on a snorkeling trip by boat, enjoying the ride, the sun is shining brightly, the water is perfectly smooth, and suddenly, quite unexpectedly, there are dolphins. They swim with the bow waves, overtake the boat on both sides, and leap out of the water.

This encounter with the wild dolphins is so unexpected and a unique experience that one will never forget.

It is incredibly exciting to observe dolphins in the wild.

Once you've packed your snorkeling gear and entered the water, remaining quiet, the curious animals will come very close, eye to eye with the dolphins; it's not uncommon to find yourself swimming right in the middle of a group of them. Watching them dive and resurface is the most moving experience you can have with marine life in the ocean.

The wild dolphins in the Red Sea/Egypt belong to the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin species, which can grow up to 2.60m long and weigh up to 230kg, with males being larger on average.

Dolphins primarily eat fish (bony and cartilaginous fish), octopuses, and squid.

Sometimes, however, seabirds, crabs, jellyfish, seals and river turtles are also on the menu.

Dolphins quench their thirst through their food. The fish filter the saltwater with their gills, and therefore have very little salt in their bodies, making them easily digestible for the marine mammals.

Excursions to swim with dolphins

In all regions of Egypt along the Red Sea, there are numerous offers from large and small providers for boat trips/snorkeling excursions and swimming with dolphins. Prices vary considerably.

To protect the dolphins and avoid chasing or disturbing them in their natural habitat, it's best to use a small, local tour operator. They organize private or small group excursions and don't chase after the dolphins. Avoid large operators who cram their boats full of tourists. If you follow these guidelines to respect the dolphins in their natural environment, you can enjoy watching them delighted by the change in their daily routine and happily playing with people.

Have fun….
